By Muhammed MS’s Bah

For the first time in years, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, the long-serving leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), faces a formidable challenge as 10 party heavyweights step forward to contest the party’s flagbearer position for the 2026 presidential elections.

The list of contenders disclosed by the UDP (United Democratic Party) officials are Borry S. Touray and Dr. Lamin J. Darboe, both respected barristers, and Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the current Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, alongside seasoned party executives and regional representatives from across The Gambia.

Darboe, known for his decades-long advocacy for democracy and human rights, now finds himself navigating an unusual test of his leadership as party members weigh fresh perspectives against his proven experience.

The UDP has outlined a transparent and structured selection process, involving interviews, vetting, and consultations with grassroots supporters in every region. The Council of Elders will also meet candidates, seeking a consensus on a flagbearer who embodies the unity, vision, and values of the party. If agreement cannot be reached, the National Executive Committee (NEC) will hold an election, featuring 65 members plus regional representatives.

Among the applicants, the inclusion of local leaders like Mayor Bensouda and community advocates highlights a generational and professional diversity that could redefine the party’s approach to leadership. Analysts suggest this contest may energize the UDP base and stimulate broader national debate on the future direction of Gambian politics.

As the party gears up for the crucial months ahead, all eyes will be on these 11 contenders as they present their vision, seek the trust of the grassroots, and position themselves for what could be one of the most-watched political battles in The Gambia’s recent history.
