Gambia’s Interior Minister Abdoulie Sanyang has confirmed the suspension of all officers involved in the patrol that led to OB’s death in Mandinary, pledging an independent investigation into the incident.
Speaking to mourners at OB’s family home, Minister Sanyang said: “I can confirm that all officers on the patrol team have been suspended,” without specifying their number. He described the incident as “shocking” and added: “The President is concerned about it and sends his condolences to the family. Such a tragedy must be thoroughly investigated.”
The Gambia Police Force has summoned the officers involved to appear before an investigative panel, part of efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding OB’s death. Eyewitnesses and members of the public with information have been urged to come forward at the Banjulunding Police Station, with assurances of confidentiality.
A postmortem examination is scheduled for Monday, 29 September, followed by a coroner’s inquest. Minister Sanyang noted: “A magistrate will be appointed to conduct court hearings on the case, allowing public access. The police will not carry out the investigation. We want it to be independent so that everyone will know what transpired.”
OB’s death has sparked protests and heightened scrutiny of police operations in Mandinary, intensifying calls from civil society for accountability and reforms within the security sector. The suspension of officers and establishment of an independent inquiry aim to restore public trust and ensure justice.
