Senior Sports Official Demoted Over Missing Funds

-

The Public Service Commission has demoted a senior sports official after he admitted responsibility for €12,500 (about \$13,800) in missing funds from the national football team’s training camp in Saudi Arabia.

Finance Minister Seedy Keita told reporters on Friday that Sutay Jawo, Director of Youths and Sports, had been given an imprest of €194,000 for the team’s preparations ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations but failed to account for part of the money. Jawo has since refunded the missing amount of 937,500 Dalasis.

The move has raised questions about accountability, with journalists asking why Jawo was not dismissed like other officials implicated in corruption cases.

Chief of Staff Mod K. Ceesay explained that Jawo’s case was different, saying he did not intend to steal the money but had instead made false expense claims.

Information Minister Ismaila Ceesay added that each case is judged individually, taking into account intent and circumstances.
