The United Democratic Party official—The Gambia Party (UDP) has officially narrowed its list of 2026 presidential flagbearer hopefuls to three from the 11 that applied: Ousainou Darboe, Borry Touray, and Amadou Sanneh.

The trio emerged from a competitive pool of eleven applicants after successfully passing both internal interviews and public vetting. Their names are now headed to the party’s Central Selection Committee for final consideration.
The selection process is crucial for the country’s largest opposition party as it positions itself for the 2026 elections. UDP officials disclosed that the committee will first attempt to reach a consensus on a single candidate. Failing that, a primary vote is scheduled for 10 September, where 81 delegates, including national executives and regional representatives, will cast ballots.
The process has not been without controversy. Talib, a prominent aspirant, withdrew from the race, citing a move that has sparked debate within party ranks. Analysts like Demba Ali Jawo and Madi Jobarteh see his withdrawal as a potential shift in the internal power dynamics, raising questions about unity and inclusivity within the party.
UDP supporters emphasize that the ideal flagbearer should combine leadership experience, integrity, and broad public appeal. By these criteria, Darboe brings decades of political leadership and legal experience, Touray is noted for his extensive experience in the legal fraternity, and Sanneh has a track record in public administration and party organization.
The final choice of the UDP flagbearer is expected to set the tone and strategy of the party’s campaign, with the candidate’s credibility, vision, and ability to unite the party seen as pivotal factors ahead of the 2026 elections.
