Savouring the Heart of Senegambia with Every Bite and Sip at Rahma’s Kitchen

Rahma’s Kitchen on Duplex Road in Kololi is a vibrant little epicentre of Senegambia’s culinary soul that you absolutely have to experience if you find yourself in The Gambia.

Stepping inside, you’re immediately welcomed by a warm, bustling vibe that promises something authentic, home-cooked, and deeply rooted in the region’s rich food heritage.

I had the pleasure of trying a few dishes that showcase the best of Senegambian flavours—the blend of Senegalese and Gambian culinary traditions that have been delighting locals and visitors alike for generations.

From the rich, nutty Domoda (a savoury peanut stew) to the flavourful Benachin, often dubbed Gambian Jollof rice, bursting with spices, tomatoes, and tender meat or fish, every bite felt like a celebration of tradition and care in every ingredient.

The special touch at Rahma’s Kitchen comes not just from the food but from the soul behind it.

I caught up with Haddy Bittaye, the restaurant’s manager, who shared her passion for cooking and her commitment to sourcing every ingredient locally.

What struck me was the pride in her voice as she explained how the restaurant supports local farmers and vendors.

The walls of Rahma’s Kitchen are adorned with photos of these very people—the men and women at market stalls who grow and harvest everything fresh and seasonal.

This gallery not only honours their hard work but also connects the diners to the story behind each meal.

Complementing the rich flavours of the food are the traditional local juices, each one a refreshing sip of Gambian culture.

From the tangy, vitamin-packed baobab juice and the vibrant, ruby-red Wonjo (sorrel juice) to the zesty kick of fresh ginger juice and a selection of other fruit juices made from ripe local harvests, the drink menu here elevates your dining experience with a burst of natural sweetness and wholesome refreshment.

It’s clear this kitchen isn’t just about feeding people; it’s about community, respect for tradition, and the celebration of local culture.

Fresh ingredients from the local markets, carefully prepared recipes passed down through generations, and that unmistakable warmth in the atmosphere make Rahma’s Kitchen far more than just a restaurant—it’s a slice of Senegambia itself.

If you want to dive deeper into their daily specials, mouth-watering local dishes, and the stories behind them, their social media pages on Facebook and Instagram offer a vibrant glimpse into the kitchen’s life and legacy (https://www.facebook.com/rahmaskitchen1/, https://www.instagram.com/_rahma.kitchen_/).
