Petition Against Senegal PM Backfires

-

A national petition calling for the resignation of Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has fizzled out just days after its heavily publicised launch, dealing a blow to its backers.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Movement of Senegalese Democrats (MSD) under the slogan “Sonko dégage” (Sonko Must Go), was unveiled on October 8, 2025 with the ambitious goal of collecting one million signatures.
Four days in, it has managed just 13,425 — a figure that falls dramatically short of expectations.
Presented as a citizen mobilisation to “save Senegalese democracy,” the petition was intended to spark widespread dissent against Sonko, whom organisers accused of betraying the promises that fueled his rise: radical change and social justice.
The start was promising by their standards, with about 8,000 signatures in the first 48 hours.
But momentum quickly stalled, and the campaign has since attracted only a trickle of new supporters, leaving it at barely 1.3% of its target. For the MSD, the numbers are a symbolic slap in the face.
What was supposed to be a show of strength has instead highlighted the group’s political isolation and the limited popular support for its cause. On social media, ridicule has replaced activism.
Many users have mocked the low turnout, describing the petition as a “monumental flop” and questioning its claim to reflect public opinion.
Beyond the numbers, the campaign’s failure signals a deeper political defeat for the MSD. The hope was to reveal a growing rift between Prime Minister Sonko and the Senegalese public.
Instead, the outcome suggests the opposite: Sonko retains a strong base, while his opponents are struggling to rally meaningful support.
What was meant to be a bold act of defiance has become a public embarrassment for its architects — and one that may have lasting consequences in Senegal’s political arena.
