The National Unity Party (NUP) says it will not nominate a candidate under its own ticket for The Gambia’s 2026 presidential election. Instead, its leader, Dr. Lamin J. Darbo, intends to run as an independent candidate under the Team Gambia Coalition.
In a statement issued Saturday afternoon, the party said it had informed the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of its decision in writing. It also said Mrs. Fatou Sowe Jaiteh had collected presidential nomination forms in the name of the Team Gambia Coalition.
The NUP said it remains a registered and active political party despite choosing not to field a candidate under its banner. It reaffirmed its commitment to a peaceful and democratic electoral process.
The decision changes the platform for Darbo’s planned presidential bid, but not his intention to contest the election.
