Gambia Red Cross Recovers 12 Bodies After Boat Tragedy Off Jinack Kajata

-

The Gambia Red Cross Society (GRCS) has recovered 12 bodies following a boat incident off Jinack Kajata in the North Bank Region.

The vessel was reportedly carrying migrants attempting to travel along the Atlantic migration route when the incident occurred.

As of October 15, 2026, the number of people still missing remained unclear. Search and response operations are continuing as authorities work to establish the full scale of the tragedy.

GRCS volunteers are assisting with the dignified management of the remains and providing mental health and psychosocial support to affected families and community members.

The Red Cross is also coordinating with relevant authorities and response partners involved in the operation. Further information is expected as the response continues.

The tragedy once again draws attention to the dangers of irregular migration along the Atlantic route, where people risk their lives aboard overcrowded or unsafe vessels in an attempt to reach other countries.

The GRCS expressed solidarity with the victims, their families and affected communities. It also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting human dignity and easing suffering during humanitarian emergencies.

Behind each life lost is a family facing grief and uncertainty. As efforts continue, responders are focused on assisting those affected and accounting for people who may still be missing.
