Gambia Shelters Cameroonian Opposition Leader

-

The Government of The Gambia has confirmed that Cameroonian opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary arrived in Banjul on 7 November 2025 and is being hosted temporarily on humanitarian grounds.

Bakary was one of the key challengers in Cameroon’s tightly contested presidential election, a vote that has since triggered heightened tension and disputes over the results.

Cameroon’s recent polls were marred by opposition allegations of irregularities, heavy security presence, and post-election unrest in several regions.

With political uncertainty deepening after the declaration of results, multiple opposition figures have reported threats, prompting regional concern over stability in Central Africa.

According to the Gambian Government, Bakary’s stay is strictly for his safety and reflects “African solidarity” as diplomatic efforts continue to ease the post-electoral standoff in his home country.

Authorities stress that The Gambia remains fully committed to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all African Union member states and will not permit its territory to be used for any subversive activities.

The government says it is in close consultation with regional partners, including Nigeria, which has been active in mediating tensions, to help foster a peaceful, negotiated settlement in Cameroon.

They further assure the public that updates will be provided as engagements progress.
