Dr Lamin J Darbo Named NUP Leader After His UDP Flagbearer Bid Fails

-

The National Unity Party (NUP) has appointed Dr Lamin J. Darbo as its new Party Leader, Secretary General, and Standard Bearer, effective October 31, 2025.

Dr Darbo, a respected legal scholar and commentator, recently contested for the United Democratic Party (UDP) flagbearer position ahead of the 2026 presidential election but failed to make it to the party’s top three finalists.

He later resigned from the UDP, citing the need for a new political direction.

In announcing his appointment, NUP described Dr Darbo as “a visionary and transparent leader” who will steer the party toward “socio-economic and political transformation.”

Formed on the ideals of merit-based leadership and national unity, the NUP distinguishes itself from traditional parties by enforcing two-term limits for its leaders and barring founding members from seeking the flagbearer position.

Dr Darbo’s entry into NUP marks his return to frontline politics and adds a fresh dynamic to The Gambia’s build-up to the 2026 presidential race.
